The Social, Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience Unit (SCAN Unit or SCAN-U) is comprised of five individual laboratories within the Department of Psychology: the Consciousness and Computation Lab, directed by Hakwan Lau; the Social Cognitive Neuroscience Lab, directed by Kevin Ochsner; the Learning Lab, directed by Daphna Shohamy; the Cognitive Neuroimaging Lab, directed by Ed Smith; and the Cognitive and Affective Control Lab, directed by Tor Wager. The goal of the SCAN Unit is to provide an interdisciplinary research and training environment for researchers at all levels interested in studying the psychological and neural bases of social, cognitive, and affective behaviors. The integration of three distinct laboratories into a cohesive integrated unit provides unique opportunities for collaborative research and training in multiple approaches, techniques, and traditions.

The member laboratories have newly remodeled research space housed in the Columbia University's Department of Psychology (map), which is located in the Morningside Heights campus of Manhattan's Upper West Side. Each lab houses computing, administrative, and research facilities supporting analysis of functional imaging data and behavioral experimentation. The SCAN-U member labs are affiliated with two Centers for functional neuroimaging located on the Washington Heights campus of Columbia University's School of Medicine (map). The first is in Columbia University's Department of Radiology, and located in the Neurological Institute of New York (#6 on map). This fMRI Research Center, directed by Dr. Joy Hirsch and also has facilities for conducting transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) experiments. The second center belongs to the New York State Psychiatric Institute (NYSPI) and the Department of Psychiatry at Columbia University. The Brain Imaging Laboratory, directed by Dr. Brad Peterson, is located in the NYSPI.
